Sacred Ministry of Music

Praise Team

The praise team is designed to usher the presence of the Lord into the sanctuary. We show how much we love and appreciate God through song and express our admiration for the deity of God the Father, Yaweh, His Son, Jesus the Christ, and His sweet Holy Spirit.

In the 96th number of Psalms, stanzas 1-4, we find: 1. Oh, sing to the Lord, a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. 3 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.4 For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. (NKJV)

Anointed Voices of Praise

Our goals: To continue to grow closer in our relationship with Jesus the Christ collectively and individually. To truly live up to our name (Anointed Voices of Praise) by letting God use us as we minister in song. Rebuilding the young adults here at Second Baptist Monrovia, reaching out to the community letting the young adults know that you can still have fun and walk a Christian lifestyle.
We minister every 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at both services. We sing all genres of gospel: A’cappella, hymns, traditional, but we lean more to a contemporary style of gospel as well as praise and worship. In this day and age, we as Christians must speak loud, and sometimes use words. In other words, our lifestyle should speak for itself and we as AVP, try our best to do just that.

Voices of Unity

We minister every 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. There is no age limit on this choir; however, our music ministry level of singing is more traditional gospel music but not limited. We have a serious crush on Jesus the Christ and He will always be the ONLY one deserving of the our praise!

Gideon's Army

Gideon’s Army male chorus ministers on every 5th Sunday of the year as well as Mother’s Day and of course Men’s day in October.

Just as Gideon’s army in Judges, chapters 7 and 8, we are small in numbers, but mighty men of valor in song! We take our stance for our Lord, Jesus the Christ very seriously and will continue to do so. This ministry is open to all the men of our fellowship.

The Combined Choir

Goal: To be committed to spreading the Word of God through music.

Motto: We are One Voice, One Sound, One Unit, and One Ministry standing together for one purpose: for God to inhabit the praises of His people!

The combined choirs consist of all the choirs singing together. We minister on outings when our Bishop is preaching, Resurrection Sunday (aka Easter) as well as our Annual Choir Day, held every 4th Sunday in September. Annual choir day is a weeklong workshop and is open to the public of ages 13 and up.

The Band

Jorge Cabrera (Guitar)
I first took guitar lessons the summer of '99, but didn't become seriously interested in music until my freshman year in high school. I played guitar and trumpet in high school and I didn't have much interest in anything else, I took every music class available and I was convinced that I would do music for the rest of my life.

In college I decided that the guitar would be my primary instrument and at that point I became more serious about it. Since then I've earned degrees in Fine and Performing Arts, Music, and Recording Arts, all from Citrus College. I have been blessed in recent years with music having had the opportunity to travel and perform in radio and television as well as in various famous venues and with many outstanding musicians and musical groups including the exceptional musicians of the SBC band of which I am proud to be a part of. I look forward to the future with my continued learning in music and great new opportunities that lie ahead always with a humble and grateful attitude.

Ashley Jemison (Saxophonist)
Born March of 1988 to two loving parents who love The Lord. Her father being a minister of music and mother a singer it was destined that Ashley would follow the same footsteps. She began playing sax in 1998 in which she excelled quickly. Two years later, she found herself playing alongside her father at various churches and has been playing ever since.

She continued to pursue studying music at California State University Los Angeles where she received her Bachelor Degree in Commercial Music with a minor in Business. While she has ventured into other genres of music she always finds her way back to Gospel. She aspires to share her gift from God all over the world and to be in line with what God desires for her to be.

John Northrup
John Northup realized his potential and talent to play music professionally while performing in his high school jazz ensemble. The new band directors helped influence him to take a professional approach towards a music career. Those instructors happened to be teachers and alumni of Citrus College, where John continued his musical studies.
While attending Citrus he met Jeremy Jenkins, who introduced him to Second Baptist . His love for gospel music grew, along with his relationship with God. John currently teaches at The School of Arts and Enterprises as well, where his new passion to educate continues to strengthen and grow.
