Second Baptist Church History

Greeting in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Welcome to
Second Baptist Church Congregants are {evangelical orthodoxy in belief and holy stance}. From our beginnings in a little house on Royal Oaks Avenue in Monrovia, California in 1902, {just 37 years following the freedom of African American slaves on December 18, 1865}, to the present. Second Baptist Church continues to stand as a beacon of hope and faith.

Our odyssey began with 14-souls committed to the truth of the {66 books by 40 men of the Holy Bible given by God}; and we are determined to live for Christ Jesus by faith. The beginning was a time of great uncertainty and pain for these new migrated freed Americans of African decent from the Holocaust of American Slavery System in the Southern States of this nation; coupled with segregation, and discrimination.

From the first parish shepherd Lieutenant Colonel E. T. Allensworth, and the second longest tenured shepherd G. Godfrey Bailey, to Bishop Wm. LaRue Dillard, of SBC who has led in developing a thoughtful blending in traditional and contemporary worship, and where diversity among its congregants is practiced, not just talked about.

Our designed out reach effort is seen in our “12-steps Miracle on Shamrock” a ministry reaching out to drug-abusers; to the feeding the homeless bi-weekly; and Evangelistic Witnessing Thrust has projected somewhat of our biblical portrait.

Second Baptist Church has a covenant with the National Baptist Convention USA Incorporated; Transformation Ministries of the Pacific South West; California State Baptist Convention, USA, Incorporated; Council of Bishops and Elders of the evangelical apologetic ministry; and the Baptist Conference of Los Angeles and Southern California.

By “Evangelical” we subscribe to the (66-canon books of the Holy Bible and the Trinity of the Godhead which is not up for revision nor change in any way).

MY SHEPHERDING BISHOPRIC to this flock begin January 1, 1974, to the present of which I have sought to highlight {MY PASSION}, which is to see unsaved drawn, believe, confess their sins, and be Spirit-Baptized into the Great Family of God through the power of the Holy Spirit (John 5:24; I Corinthians 12: 12,13).

MY METHOD is that of serving the saints joyfully by Teaching, Preaching, Writing Gifts, and grounding them in the truth of the Whole Council of God.

MY ATTITUDE is that of Faith in our Living Lord Christ who “delights to do abundantly above all that we could ask or think.”

MY MOTTO “What God Guides He Provides! (Proverbs 3:5, 6); I believe that a part of my divine assignment has given me a Yearning desire of Shaping the Successes and Failures; Hopes and Hurts; Joys and Sorrows of the Saints of my parish as well as others.

In this vocation I am led to be: {An Encouraging Cheerleader for the Affluent and the Downtrodden of their Lives; and a Confidant for their Triumphs}. God continues to be at work in the lives of the parishioners of my flock building Moral Responsibility, Concern for Others, Intellectual Objectivity, Critical Thinking, Personal Integrity, Spiritual Dignity, and Self-Discipline. We are learning to become the Lord’s representatives in this pernicious society.

My weekly ‘LOVE EPISTLES’ to my flock is written with aim and design that these materials will affect spiritual growth and development of the saints. It is my prayer that you will be blessed personally and collectively as you read any of the epistles of love.

My Serious Crush on the Christ has resulted in my motto:

'What God Guides He Provides!'

Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop Wm. LaRue Dillard
